AfricaNenda Foundation works with countries across Africa to build instant payment systems that are inclusive by design. Our focus is simple: help make digital payments work for everyone, especially people who have long been excluded from the financial system.
Amina runs a small fruit stall in a bustling West African market. She wakes up before dawn, works tirelessly, and keeps all her earnings in cash. With no bank account, no safe way to save, and no access to credit, a single theft or unexpected expense could wipe out everything she has built.
Amina’s story is not unique. Across Africa, 400 million adults live outside the formal financial system. Women running microbusinesses, farmers seeking fair prices, and workers managing tight budgets all face fragile livelihoods without secure, affordable financial services.
Digital payments can change this. They allow people to safely open accounts, pay merchants, and manage their money. But for everyone to benefit, countries need infrastructure that is instant, interoperable, accessible, affordable, and reliable.
Yet major gaps remain. Only 25 African countries have instant payment systems (IPS), which form the backbone of a country’s digital public infrastructure. Inclusive instant payment systems (IIPS) provide fair access, multiple use cases, and safe, reliable payments for all.
AfricaNenda Foundation exists to help people like Amina. We accelerate the development, launch, and improvement of IIPS, bringing seamless and affordable digital payments to millions across Africa.
